FAQs
We understand that choosing in-home euthanasia for your pet is a significant decision, and you may have many questions. Below are some of the most common questions we receive, along with detailed answers to help guide you through this process.
What is in-home euthanasia?
In-home euthanasia is a service where a veterinarian comes to your home to perform the euthanasia procedure in contrast to you bringing your pet to the vet clinic. This allows your pet to pass away peacefully in the comfort of all their familiar and favourite things.
How do I know if it's the right time to consider euthanasia for my pet?
Determining the right time for euthanasia can be difficult. Common signs that it may be time include chronic pain that cannot be controlled with medication, a significant decline in quality of life, inability to perform basic functions and a lack of interest in favorite activities. Dr. Mel can help assess your pet’s condition and provide guidance during an initial consultation.

What can I expect during the euthanasia process?
The process involves several steps:
- Initial Consultation: Dr. Mel will discuss your pet’s condition and explain the process.
- Home Visit: Dr. Mel will arrive at your home, examine your pet and ensure they are comfortable.
- Sedation: Your pet will be given a sedative to relax them, ensure they feel no pain and induce a sleep like state.
- Euthanasia: Once your pet is peacefully sedated, a second injection will be administered to quickly and gently end all life functions.
- Aftercare: We offer assistance with aftercare arrangements, such as cremation and memorial options.
How should I prepare for the euthanasia appointment?
- Consider who you would like present at the time – family, friends, other pets. Having people to support you during this time can also be helpful.
- Prepare a bucket list of favourite things your pet enjoys. This can include favourite foods, activities or places.
- A comfortable and quiet area in your home is ideal.
- Favourite blankets, toys and treats.
How long does the procedure take?
The entire process usually takes about 45-60 minutes, though this can vary depending on the specific circumstances. Dr. Mel will take the time necessary to ensure you and your pet comfortable and that you have the support you need.
What happens after the euthanasia procedure?
After the procedure, you can spend some time with your pet to say your final goodbyes. We can help arrange for aftercare, including cremation services. Dr. Mel will discuss your preferences and ensure your pet is treated with respect and dignity.
How much does the service cost?
Our comprehensive in-home euthanasia service costs $450 + GST. This fee includes the initial consultation, home visit, euthanasia procedure and aftercare support. We accept various payment methods, including credit/debit cards, bank transfers and cash.
Can I be with my pet during the euthanasia process?
Yes, we encourage you to be with your pet during the entire process. Your presence can provide comfort and reassurance to your pet in their final moments.
